What does getting pregnant with an egg or sperm donor involve?

Donor services may involve:

  • Artificial insemination with donor sperm
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor eggs
  • Gestational surrogacy

In the case of IVF, The New York Fertility Center utilizes “fresh” retrieved eggs from thoroughly screened donors (we can also use frozen donor eggs). If we use recently donated eggs, they help you sync up your cycle with that of the donor’s.

The donor egg is then inseminated with your partner’s sperm — or a donor’s sperm — to create an embryo. Finally, The New York Fertility Center team transfers the embryo to your uterus.

When are donor eggs most commonly used?

A significant percentage of IVF procedures in the United States involve donor eggs. The most common scenarios where donor egg services are utilized include the following:

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Premature menopause
  • Repeated IVF failures
  • Absence of ovaries
  • Previous surgeries of the ovary
  • Effects of cancer/chemotherapy and radiation

Are there donor options for LGBTQ folks?

If you’re a member of the LGBTQ community, the multiple donor options offered by The New York Fertility Center allow you to have a biological as well as emotional connection to your child.

Anyone can be fertile and still need help starting a family, and that includes LGBTQ folks. We have extensive experience working with the LGBTQ community who are seeking the assistance of a fertility center, so feel free to visit The New York Fertility Center for help.
