A Smarter Path to Family Building
What Is IUI?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive fertility treatment that helps increase the chances of pregnancy. During an IUI procedure, specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. By placing the sperm closer to the egg, IUI helps improve the opportunity for fertilization.
IUI is often recommended as one of the first fertility treatments because it is less invasive, more affordable, and requires less medication than in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Who Is IUI For?
IUI may be an effective treatment option for individuals and couples experiencing:
- Unexplained infertility
- Mild male factor infertility, including mildly reduced sperm count or motility
- Ovulation disorders that respond to fertility medications
- Cervical factor infertility
- Difficulty with intercourse due to medical conditions
- Single women using donor sperm
- Same-sex female couples using donor sperm
The best treatment option depends on your age, fertility history, diagnostic testing, and family-building goals.
What Are the Criteria for a Successful IUI?
While IUI can help many patients achieve pregnancy, success depends on several important factors. You may be a good candidate for IUI if you have:
- At least one open, healthy fallopian tube, confirmed through fertility testing.
- Regular ovulation or the ability to ovulate with fertility medications.
- Adequate sperm quality, including sufficient sperm count and motility after sperm preparation.
- Healthy ovarian reserve, particularly for women under age 35, although IUI may also be appropriate for select patients over 35 depending on their evaluation.
- No severe male factor infertility, as significantly abnormal sperm parameters may be better treated with IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
- No advanced tubal disease or severe endometriosis, which can reduce the likelihood of IUI success.
Additional factors that can improve the chances of pregnancy include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, optimizing body weight, avoiding tobacco use, and carefully timing insemination with ovulation.
Because every patient's fertility journey is unique, a comprehensive evaluation is essential to determine whether IUI offers the best chance of success.
