Harness the Power of Glutathione Therapy
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant naturally produced by the body that plays an important role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and supporting overall health. At The New York Fertility Center, we offer glutathione therapy as part of our comprehensive wellness and fertility support services.
Our personalized approach focuses on helping patients optimize their health through advanced therapies tailored to their individual goals. Whether you are seeking antioxidant support, cellular wellness, or additional support during your fertility journey, our team is here to guide you.
What Is Glutathione Therapy?
Glutathione is often referred to as the body’s “master antioxidant” because of its role in helping protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress. Through intravenous therapy, glutathione can be delivered directly into the bloodstream for efficient absorption and targeted support.
What is glutathione?
Glutathione is one of the body's most important antioxidants. It helps protect cells from oxidative stress, supports energy production, and plays a role in normal egg maturation and early embryo development. Because oxidative stress is thought to contribute to age-related declines in fertility, glutathione has attracted interest as a potential fertility supplement.
Why does glutathione decline with age?
Several factors contribute:
- Reduced production: The body becomes less efficient at making glutathione.
- Greater oxidative stress: As we age, cells produce more reactive oxygen species (free radicals), which consume glutathione.
- Reduced recycling: Older cells are less efficient at converting oxidized glutathathione (GSSG) back to its active form (GSH).
- Mitochondrial aging: Mitochondria become less efficient over time, increasing oxidative stress and depleting glutathione.
How does this affect egg quality?
Women are born with all of their eggs, which age along with the body. As glutathione levels decline:
1. More oxidative damage
- Eggs are exposed to higher levels of reactive oxygen species.
- DNA, proteins, and cell membranes become more susceptible to damage.
2. Mitochondrial dysfunction
- Mitochondria produce the energy needed for egg maturation and early embryo development.
- Lower glutathione reduces protection against oxidative damage, which may impair mitochondrial function.
3. Increased chromosome errors
- Oxidative stress can interfere with the machinery that separates chromosomes during meiosis.
- This may contribute to the higher rate of chromosomal abnormalities seen with increasing maternal age.
4. Reduced fertilization potential
- Glutathione helps maintain the proper environment inside the egg for sperm DNA decondensation after fertilization.
- Low levels may reduce developmental competence, although many other factors also influence this process.
Can glutathione improve egg quality?
Possibly, but the evidence is limited.
- Laboratory and animal studies suggest glutathione plays an important role in egg maturation and embryo development.
- In humans, there is not enough high-quality evidence to conclude that glutathione supplements consistently improve egg quality, pregnancy rates, or live birth rates.
Who might benefit from glutathione?
Some fertility specialists may consider it for:
- Women with diminished ovarian reserve
- Women of advanced maternal age
- Individuals with conditions associated with increased oxidative stress
Can glutathione be combined with other fertility supplements?
It is sometimes used alongside supplements such as:
- CoQ10
- Vitamin D (if deficient)
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Prenatal vitamins
- Melatonin (in selected IVF patients under physician guidance)
