A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your fertility specialist to examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted camera called a hysteroscope. This procedure provides a clear view of the uterine cavity, helping identify conditions that may affect fertility, pregnancy, or overall reproductive health.
Why Is a Hysteroscopy Performed?
Hysteroscopy is often recommended to diagnose or treat abnormalities within the uterus that could interfere with conception or increase the risk of miscarriage. Your providers may recommend this procedure if you have:
- Difficulty becoming pregnant
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Suspected uterine polyps or fibroids
- Uterine scar tissue (adhesions)
- A uterine septum or other congenital uterine abnormalities
- An abnormal ultrasound or imaging result that requires further evaluation
How Can Hysteroscopy Help?
In addition to providing an accurate diagnosis, hysteroscopy can often be used to treat many uterine conditions during the same procedure. Removing polyps, fibroids, scar tissue, or correcting structural abnormalities may improve the uterine environment, increasing the chances of successful implantation and a healthy pregnancy.
Because hysteroscopy is performed without external incisions, most patients experience minimal discomfort and recover quickly, often returning to normal activities within a day or two.
What to Expect
Hysteroscopy is typically performed in an outpatient setting and usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on whether treatment is needed. Your providers will discuss the appropriate anesthesia or sedation options based on your individual care plan.
Following the procedure, mild cramping or light spotting is common and generally resolves within a few days. Your fertility specialist will review the findings with you and discuss any next steps to help you achieve your family-building goals.

A procedure that removes or destroys the uterine lining to reduce or treat heavy menstrual bleeding.
Transcervical Fallopian Tube Cannulation
A procedure used to open blocked fallopian tube entrances and address certain causes of infertility.

Removal of retained or embedded objects, including misplaced or retained intrauterine devices (IUDs).
